Casting Shadows - BBC Radio Play - listened 5.9.24 (3/5)

BBC Radio play describing the history of the birth of the British film industry between the years 1895 and 1905. The "Brighton School" developed around some of the earliest film studios in the world which were built in the towns of Brighton & Hove. Brighton was also the site of the development of early cinema equipment and cameras, including a rudimentary colour system. The play featured stories involving showman-filmmaker George Albert Smith, his actor-comedienne wife, Laura Bayley, the Scottish pharmacist-turned-filmmaker James Williamson; and the American hustler Charles Urban, the world’s first movie mogul. The amusing drama is presented as a series of vignettes involving the characters linked by narration from modern film historian, Frank Gray. Sadly from the 1910s, Brighton was eclipsed by the growth of British film making at Elstree, and obviously the developments in Hollywood. Cast included Karl Davies, Tom Cotcher, Jenny Funnell, Roger Alborough, Hilary Maclean, Madeline Hatt, Paul Bazely and Russell Floyd. Directed by Andy Jordan and written by Jonathan Holloway. Originally broadcast June 2024.
